1.3.10 | ![]() | Much of the episode is centred on a private school. | This is Stoodleigh Court in Stoodleigh village, Tiverton, Devon. At the time of filming it was the Ravenswood Prep School but it closed in 1991. These days it is run as a venue for corporate events and wedding functions..
1.3.15 | ![]() | The Hansfords go trekking across the moors. | This is in the middle of Exmoor.
1.3.17 | ![]() | A very long shot of the Hansfords on horseback. | This shot was probably taken from up on the Dunkery Beacon (the highest point in Exmoor), looking west.
1.3.20 | ![]() | Eddie tries to talk to Major Hansford at the station. | This is at Bishops Lydeard railway station on the West Somerset Railway. There is a short article about the Shoestring filming on the West Somerset Railway website.
1.3.30 | ![]() | Mrs Jean Hansford takes a walk on the beach and a sniper shoots at her dog. | - This one took me around 25 hours to find ! The angle and shortness of the shadows shows that this was taken near mid-day in Summer. Therefore, the beach is on a north coast, with the camera facing westwards. The tree and field covered hill in the background slope gently from high ground to the shore and there are groynes on the beach. The rest of the episode is filmed around Exmoor, so is this on the north coast of West Somerset or Devon? I originally thought this was Porlock Bay but having visited Porlock Weir it didn't quite match...then I thought it was maybe West Quantoxhead in West Somerset. Fortunately Mark Turner has positively identified the location, as he went there on his holidays. Mrs Hansford is on the beach near Blue Anchor, Somerset. The rock which the sniper hides behind is 600m East of the Blue Anchor pub ((TA24 6JP) on the B3191). -------------
1.3.40 | ![]() | Eddie returns to Fordingvale Psychiatric Hospital to talk to the doctor about a former patient. | Popular
opinion says this is Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. But Dr James
Briggs who has recorded the history of Frenchay Hospital and was a
consultant there from 1966 - 1993 says "Although the picture looks like
Frenchay, there were no decked-over paths at the hospital.
Additionally, I never heard any whispers or chat about filming having
taken place. This is not Frenchay". But it looks like Christopher Coombes has solved it. He writes: "This was actually shot at the old Sandhill Park Hospital in Bishops Lydeard which at the time was a hospital for people with learning difficulties. I actually worked there from 1972 until it closed in 1992 and can remember that staff were not allowed in that area due to filming. The covered walkways were from the wards down to the OT department and also to the riding for the disabled centre."
1.3.43 | ![]() | Eddie goes to see Rodney at the meat packing factory. | Location unknown.
1.3.47 | ![]() | Eddie goes to the stables to talk to Mrs Hansford without being "threatened by Rommel". | This one took some finding. It's the "Old Livery" on Andrews Hill, Dulverton, Somerset, south of Exemoor National Park. Note to Google Streetview - please provide 100% coverage of the UK, not just 99.9%* *or whatever!
1.3.50 | ![]() | Mrs Hansford’s funeral. | This is St Mary’s Church in Oare, Exmoor, Somerset.
1.3.60 | ![]() | Eddie talks to Major Hansford. | This is St Mary’s Church in Oare, Exmoor again.
1.3.70 | ![]() | Eddie talks to Tom Clarke. | This is the Raleghs Cross Inn, Brendon Hill, Exmoor, Somerset. |
